Getting Started with Ice Hockey

Canterbury Ice Hockey Association (CIHA) runs a range of Learn to Play (LTP) sessions during the school term for both tamariki and adults — right here at Alpine Ice.

For kids (under 18):
LTP runs throughout the school year and uses fun games and coaching to teach the essentials — skating, puck control, passing, and shooting. If your child’s new to hockey, they can try a free session (with basic gear provided) to see if it’s the right fit.

For adults:
There’s a 3-use Give It a Go concession card for $60, which is a great way to get started without pressure.

If you or your child are new to skating, we recommend joining an Alpine Ice Learn to Skate class to build confidence and speed up your progress on the ice.

Stick & Puck Sessions

Stick & Puck sessions are a great way to practise your skills or just get out on the ice and hit a puck around. The sessions are casual and are added when our schedule allows.

All ages and abilities are welcome. It’s a relaxed, non-contact session, perfect for building confidence or just having a go.

Safety first: Helmets are required for all skaters, and gloves, shin, and shoulder protection are highly recommended. No slap shots or shots above the knee, please.

Don’t have gear? No worries. Most equipment is available to hire:

• Rental skates – $4
• Helmet – $4
• Stick – $5
• Puck – $5
